Why do otherwise intelligent people sometimes believe irrational ideas? In this talk, Dr. John Eigenauer, intellectual historian and Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Taft College in California, explores the mysteries of irrational beliefs and behaviors and what they reveal about the way our brains work. Why do some people believe that the Earth is flat, that vaccines cause autism, or that Bill Gates caused COVID in order to use nanotechnology for mind control? Through these and other examples, John Eigenauer examines the mechanisms behind irrational beliefs and the challenges they pose to human reasoning. A thought-provoking talk about human rationality, critical thinking, and the ways our minds can sometimes lead us astray.
